Can’t Hurt Me – David Goggins
In the book Can’t Hurt Me, David Goggins talks about the most abusive life you can ever imagine. Growing up in upstate New York, his father physically beat him, his brother and his mother. One day, the child had enough and escaped with his mother and his brother and moved away from the Father. But the scar tissue is there. David talks to stories that are too dark to imagine; being bullied, being called things that nobody should be called. His mother moved them to a town in Indiana, where the head of the Ku Klux Klan organized a March in the 90s. I didn’t even know that that existed in the 90s. David was able to turn that into fuel. David was working as a bug exterminator and on his way home from work one day he grabbed a box doughnuts and a milkshake. Later that night he saw a video of the Navy Seals. In that moment, he decided that he wanted to be a seal. Two problems arose: he was 297 pounds and he was black. When visiting the recruiting office, they told him you’re too fat and there’s only been 35 African Americans to ever become a seal. He decided at that moment that he was going to do it and he started his journey to become the “World’s Hardest Man.” Has he done it? I think he has. At the end of every chapter, David issues you a challenge that make the book interactive, so that you can start your own journey to be the best version of you possible. It’s a painful read, it’s an amazing read, and it will transform your life.
Relentless – Tim Grover
I’ve had the benefit of reading the book, Relentless, and becoming friends with the author Tim Grover. Tim Grover was a coach of the greatest basketball player and one of the greatest athletes of all time, Michael Jordan. In addition to Michael Jordan, he was a training coach for Kobe Bryant and a number of other professional athletes. This book gives you an insight in what it is to be a cleaner. ‘The Cleaner’ being the ultimate athlete, the ultimate warrior, or the ultimate champion. You get a rare look at the activities and the work ethic of these athletes. You can’t help but make the analogy of how that can apply to us in our business life. Are you a cooler? Are you a closer? Are you a cleaner? Cleaner categories are reserved for those elite top 1% that are in every business, every sport. Being a cleaner is not relegated to just athletes. There’s a mom that’s at the top of her game that is a cleaner. There’s a bus driver, that is a cleaner. There’s a businessman and a politician that are cleaners. This book will help you to identify which category you’re in and you can find out if you have what it takes to be a cleaner.
